Reading Zarathustra (HON 407U)

Summer session only.

Instructor: Kathleen Merrow

Course Content
Nietzsche's "black bible" is his most difficult text, as it is densely intertextual and thus makes high demands on the reader's familiarity with the intellectual and rhetorical traditions of Western culture. We will approach it as a textual "war machine" that undermines and transforms from the inside out these cultural forms. This four week course will be conducted as a seminar and will engage in a guided close reading of Thus Spoke Zarathustra that emphasizes its use and manipulation of the Judeo-Christian and Classical material as one way to aproach Nietzsche's larger project. This course will count as upper division seminar credit.

Enrollment is restricted to those with junior standing and above, or those who obtain in advance the written permission of the instructor.
