Internship Opportunities

Photo of Leshu Torchin

Leshu Torchin graduated from the honors college in 1995, majoring in General Studies, Arts and Letters, and wrote her baccalaureate thesis on Euripides' Bacchae. She says of her experience in Honors that it "benefited me greatly. My internship at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum provided me with opportunities that have extended beyond my undergraduate experience. I also found that the seminar format of the classes worked well as preparation for graduate school and academe."

She is currently Lecturer in Film Studies at St. Andrews Scotland.

The internship experience in Washington, D.C. is one of the unique aspects of the Honors Program at Portland State University. Generally, participating students spend one academic quarter of their junior year living in the group-housing accommodation provided by the Program and working at an internship appropriate to their academic major.

Participation in the internship experience is by Honors Faculty nomination and based on superior performance in core course work.

Thus, our pre-medical students have pursued both research and clinical internships at the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Mental Health; our historians have held internships in the many research facilities of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian; and students interested in careers in law and government have had internships both in congressional offices and in certain carefully selected nongovernmental organizations in the Washington area.

Other students have worked at the Folger Library, the Woodrow Wilson Center, the Library of Congress, and many other organizations too numerous to mention.

It has become increasingly typical that the research undertaken during the internship has become the first step for the student's baccalaureate thesis as well as a major part of the portfolio for application to graduate or professional school.

“As a Pre-Medical student, I found the opportunity to be immersed in medical research invaluable, and I am indebted to the Honors Program for the experience. My research at the National Institutes of Health investigated the link between sedentary careers and obesity in women. Our main goal was to develop a worksite wellness program that can be promoted nationally; this research is currently being published in The American Journal of Cardiology, The New England Journal of Medicine, and other journals.”
